Aftercare For “disruptive physicians” is a Critical Factor in Successful Intervention

Aftercare has been routinely mandated for psychiatric impairment, substance abuse and boundary issues for physician clients. The Vanderbilt and University of California Medical School Programs for “disruptive physicians” also include aftercare. Aftercare helps the participant increase his or her ability to maintain the initial gains made in the program and continue to enhance the skills in which the participant scored in the deficit range during the assessment.

During the last several years, Anderson & Anderson has offered free aftercare to some of the physicians who completed the intensive 12 Session Coaching Program. We have charged for this service for physicians from non-California based Hospital Chains.

It is interesting to note that the physicians who were required to pay for Aftercare were more likely to attend than those who received the service free. In addition the participants who were told in advance that they were expected to complete the 6 - month after care were more likely to follow through with the recommendation than those who were given an option.

The bi-monthly aftercare from Anderson & Anderson is designed to assist the physician to continue reading the two client workbooks as well as practicing the skill enhancement tools which are incorporated into all of the material. In each aftercare phone session (1/2 hr.), the client is expected to relate the material to real life experiences at the Hospital. Therefore, it is always practiced based.

Anderson & Anderson recommends that all future “disruptive physician” clients be required to complete the 6-month bi-monthly aftercare program. Perhaps the cost for aftercare can be included in the total cost of the program at the time of enrollment.
