Prison Service to host Cayman anger course
Tuesday, August 3, 2004 The prison Service is
hosting a two-day anger management training workshop
beginning at 9 am on 11 August at the Mary Miller
Hall in Red Bay. The course is open to residents at
a cost of US $210 per person.
‘Anger Management Certification for Adult
Facilitators Workshop’ will be presented by George
Anderson, whose firm Anderson & Anderson provides
anger management training for government agencies
across the world in Bermuda, Canada, Guam, Italy,
the Philippines, South Africa and the US.
Mr Anderson is perhaps best known as the technical
consultant for the film, ‘Anger Management’ starring
Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler.
The course is geared towards people in management,
and supervising positions in government and
business. Hosts of the workshop, the Prison Service,
Deputy Director of Prisons, Daniel Greaves said: “We
understand that from time to time inmates will get
angry because of the situation that they are in, and
we can influence this by the way we treat them.
“Apart from the fact that we are constantly facing
people with anger, staff need to understand the
implications of both sides of a situation. We
already have people teaching anger management but we
also want to formalise these people and have them
certified.
“We have some counsellors who give anger management
training, but this course has been arranged in an
effort to further prevent it before it happens. We
want to further equip our staff and to improve our
training programme.”
Mr Greaves did not think Cayman was an angry society
but said: “I don’t think we have a great problem
with anger in Cayman, but this [workshop] is acting
pro-actively, to teach why people get angry so as to
prevent it.”
Besides prison staff from Northwood and Fairbanks
prisons, other participating government agencies
are: Eagle House, The Health Services Authority, The
Department of Children and Family, Caribbean Haven,
The Customs Department, The Immigration Department,
Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, Probation Aftercare,
The Sunrise Centre and Cayman Airways.
